Benefits of Being a Choice Enrollment School

Students in Littleton, Colorado have the option of attending any school that has space available in Jeffco. This geographic freedom of choice is known as “Choice Enrollment” and Colorado is one of just a few states who give education options to parents. There are many factors that should be considered before deciding to place your child in a “choice” school. Here are a few benefits of attending a choice enrollment school for families moving to the area:

1. School Boundaries No Longer Exist

New students moving to the area can now attend any school rather than just the one dictated by their address. This allows families the freedom to purchase a home where they want and still attend the school of their choice. House hunting buyers can now eliminate ‘good schools’ as one of their must haves in a new home. Now families can buy or rent a home anywhere in Jefferson County and still attend a top ranked school like Collegiate Academy, which is located in the Ken Caryl area of Littleton near main transportation arteries at C-470 and Kipling Parkway.

2. Better Choices for Families

Not every school is a good fit for every child. Parents can choose to have their kids attend a top-ranked choice enrollment school rather than just the local neighborhood school which may or may not have good rankings. Also, if you choose a charter school, they will have the independence to choose different curriculum or different approaches to teaching.  One example is the back-to-basics approach of the Core Knowledge sequence, which eliminates the fluff and provides a focused sequence of foundational principles in math, language arts, science and social studies which is expanded upon at each increasing grade level. Problem-based learning takes these foundational principles and asks students to apply them to develop solutions to authentic, real-life situations while at the same time developing skills of teamwork and collaboration which are increasingly demanded by 21st century employers.

3. Diverse Student Population

Since students from all areas of Jefferson county can attend any Jeffco school, the campuses tend to be more socio-economically and racially diverse. Being able to interact with students from different backgrounds helps prepare them for more real-world experiences outside of the West Metro Denver area.

4. Fosters Healthy Competition

Open enrollment indirectly places pressure on schools to perform at their highest levels and meet students needs. It also encourages schools to refine and perfect their approach to education, rather than attempting to be all things to all people. This accountability motivates schools to offer excellence in programming in order to attract students and maintain enrollment numbers, or face closure due to low enrollment.

5. Avoid Overcrowded Schools

Traditionally, neighborhood schools can be overcrowded, impacting how well any one teacher can know individual students and tailor instruction to individual student needs. Parents in Jeffco have the option to consider class size in their school selection process, and may select a school like Collegiate Academy which by philosophy and in its charter, limits classroom sizes as compared to a traditional school.  For example, at Collegiate Academy, the elementary school (K-6) typically averages 20 students per class, the middle school (grades 7-8) has an average class size of 20 students, and the high school (grades 9-12) averages 15 students per class. The small class sizes help students to get more one-on-one attention from the instructor, and the teachers have more time to dedicate to each student’s whole education.

Families moving to Littleton have the freedom to send their child to a choice enrollment school, such as Collegiate Academy where their children will be able to flourish with small class sizes, innovative learning, and great accountability. Having a choice is important and in Jefferson County, you as a parent have the freedom to make the choice of which school your child attends!
